  1. Have an API available for third parties.
With it, developers will be able to offer desktop clients that access the dictionary, or do other things I haven't thought about at all.

We would like to do this as soon as possible. If you have suggestions for what you would like to see in an API, please email us (feedback AT wordnik DOT com). Thanks!

  2. It would be great if you can add additional languages to your offering.
Having this as a multilingual dictionary can really make me use it :-)

It would be great to have more languages, and we’re all in favor of multilingualism. However, we have a lot of work to do on the English part before we can branch out … but we’ll get there eventually!

  3. curious about wordnik's potential relationship with slang. though "less scientific," urbandictionary.com is an incredible, if needlessly excessive and unmoderated tool for "expanding the paper" upon which we're compiling the language. any possibility of collaborating with them or a similar open-source slang/patois/regional-dialect aggregation service?

We are absolutely open to slang! Since we’re relying on written sources, evidence for certain slang terms can be rare — we’d love for people to add notes for words where we have no written evidence!

And we love Aaron at the Urban Dictionary, and would love to work with him. :-)

We’d like to do this, too! In the meantime, feel free to check out the “Serendipity” words on each page, for browsing pleasure. :-)

  6. A little color theory goes a long way. Low-contrast backgrounds that contain similar color elements to those used in fonts create conditions that make the website difficult to use, especially for those 10% of American men with some form of colorblindness

Thank you — we’re working on updating our design and will make sure to check it for color-vision problems.

  7. When searching for words with accents (umlauts, etc), we currently need to actually enter the accented letter. It would be easier if "née" and "nee" could bring up the same search results.

We’re hoping to add a large list of rhyming words soon. In the meantime you can add your own rhyming words suggestions through the “Suggest a Related Word” option.

  9. Column layout a la a traditional dictionary. The entries contain rich information eg flickr photos or other user contributed content.

  10. Flash drawing applet.

Example: a definition of incisive could be embellished by drawing an image of incisor teeth, a letter cut in two.

Flag drawing as inappropriate option, too ;)

Thanks — we don’t really have the skillset to tackle this right now (we’re word people, not image people). But if you have drawings you’d like to have Wordnik search, you can always add them to Flickr with the appropriate keywords …

  11. Allow logged in users to create a personal Wordnik page with the information elements that are desired most for their needs. I love what you are doing with this site!

This is a great idea! We’ll see how soon we can do this (we’d like this ourselves)!

(and thanks for the kind words about Wordnik!)

  12. There was a few results had quite a bit of swearing in so they're probably not the best examples of the word usage

We’re planning to offer a filtered/unfiltered view soon. Although a few well-placed obscenities can often make for a very interesting example …

  13. Sort of like on wikipedia where you can get a random page, just a random word.

  14. When first coming to wordnik.com and putting an item in the search bar the "find your word" takes too long to disappear. When hitting enter the cursor goes to the bottom of the page and will not type into the search box.

  15. Etymology information contains a lot of abbreviations which makes it somewhat inaccessible. Expanding these abbreviations might help.

Etymology information also might be easier to read if it was presented in a prettier format (maybe with more whitespace).

We’re currently accepting mascot applications. Characters should have at least three years of mascot experience, preferably in the education or consumer-web field. Should be kid-friendly, but not juvenile. Please, no characters from products rated MA or above.

We are working on adding this for entries where we have conventional definitions, and should have this soon. For words without definitions, it may take a little longer to be able to display parts of speech.

  19. I try "cow" and am told it was unusual in 1800. I try "kine" (a plural of cow) and am told I can expect to see it about once a month. These "stats" strike me as wrong. The meanings of the bubbles are difficult to interpret. I love stats but need to know more about how they're generated, maybe alternate ways to generate.

  20. Add common phrases in which words are used. For example, when I look up blue, I might see the phrases "wild blue yonder," "blue moon," etc.
